So you want to become an accountant working in banking and financial services? With around five years’ experience in accounting in finance, where in the world can you find the highest paid jobs and what, exactly, are their titles? We’ve looked at the global salary surveys of both Robert Walters and Robert Half and have identified the following positions on your behalf.
The figures given below have been converted into dollars. Please note that they are for salaries only: these jobs are likely to command bonuses on top of the salaries given. Those bonuses could increase the total pay figure by anything from 5%-20%.
1. Vice president of product control working in a bank in New York City: $220k
Robert Walters suggests the best paid accounting in finance jobs are in New York City. There, a vice president (VP) level accountant working in a product control role can earn up to $220k in salary, making this the highest paying mid-level accounting job globally.
=2, 3 and 4: Product controllers, internal auditors and regulatory reporting professionals in the City of London: Up to $201k
London-based accountants in financial services are some of the best paid in the world. Robert Walters puts salaries for product controllers, internal auditors and regulatory reporting professionals with five to eight years’ experience at up to £130k ($201k).
5. Finance projects in Japan: Up to $190k
The Tokyo-based job market is notoriously closed to outsiders, but if you can get in it’s also well-paid. Robert Half says finance projects professionals in Tokyo can earn up to ¥19.3m ($190k) with around 5 years’ experience.
6. Audit manager in Zurich: Up to $182k
Swiss-based financial services accountants are also among the world’s best paid. Robert Walters says a generically titled ‘audit manager’ in Zurich can earn up to CHF160k ($182k) with five to eight years’ experience.
7. Financial Controller in Zurich: Up to $171k
With five to eight years’ experience, financial controllers in Zurich are on CHF150k ($171k) according to Robert Walters.
=8,9. Tax accountants and internal auditors in Hong Kong: Up to $167k
Hong Kong-based accountants in finance earn less before tax than their counterparts in London, New York, or Switzerland, but they don’t do too badly when the country’s 17% top rate of income tax is taken into consideration. According to Robert Half, VP level tax accounting specialists and internal auditors in the jurisdiction are on HK$1.3m ($167k).
=10,11. Tax and internal audit professionals in Singapore: Up to $160k
Singapore-based accountants earn less than Hong Kong-based accountants, and less than their counterparts in London and New York, but they too don’t do too badly for themselves when the island’s low rate of income tax is factored in.
